How to Spot a Scam Email: Simple Tips to Stay Safe Online in Wandsworth

Scam emails are becoming more convincing every day. From fake delivery messages to urgent requests that look like they’re from your bank or the NHS, it can be difficult to know what’s real and what isn’t. For many people, especially those building confidence online, these scams can be stressful and damaging.

At Power to Connect, we see first-hand how digital inclusion and digital confidence go hand in hand. Knowing how to spot a scam is a key part of digital literacy, and it’s something we support residents with every week through our free digital skills training across Wandsworth.

Common Signs of a Scam Email

While scam emails are getting smarter, there are still some clear warning signs to look out for:

  1. Emails from unfamiliar or slightly incorrect sender addresses
  2. Messages that create urgency, panic or pressure to act quickly
  3. Links that don’t match the website they claim to be from
  4. Unexpected attachments or requests for personal information
  5. Spelling mistakes, unusual wording or poor formatting

These are exactly the kinds of things we cover in our digital skills courses, helping people feel more confident spotting scams and protecting themselves online.

More Than Skills: Supporting Digital Inclusion

Staying safe online is just one part of digital inclusion. Many people we support also face barriers due to a lack of devices or reliable access to technology. Alongside our digital literacy courses in the UK, we refurbish and redistribute donated devices to local families and individuals.

If you’re searching for ways to recycle computers, donate laptops in the UK, or support a laptops for charity or computer recycling charity, donating your old devices helps reduce electronic waste while giving someone else the chance to get online.

How You Can Get Involved

There are lots of ways to support this work. You can attend a session, encourage someone else to come along, or get involved through volunteering in Wandsworth as a Digital Champion or tech volunteer. You can also support our device reuse work by donating electrical items or old laptops that are no longer needed.

Every skill shared, device donated, and hour volunteered helps make the internet a safer and more accessible place for our community.
